This Star Won’t Go Out by Esther Earl – A Review

It’s important to know the background to this book before you read it, because then you’ll get the full force of its message and understand just how powerful it is.

This Star Won’t Go Out was written by Esther Earl, although it was put together by her family members and friends after her death in 2010. She was at that point just 16 years of age. She had been a keen internet vlogger and was well established as an online personality. Before her death, she befriended the author John Green, who later wrote the bestselling novel The Fault in Our Stars in 2012. He dedicated the book to her memory and credited her for inspiring him and his novel.

Esther Earl died of cancer on August 25th, 2010 after a short fight with an aggressive sort of cancer. In her memory, her friends and family gathered together her writing – letters and other writings – into the book This Star Won’t Go Out. Reading it with all this in mind really makes it more touching and all the more devastating.

Earl’s writing is mature and accomplished, especially for one so young. It feels as though the writing in the book has not been heavily edited, so it does definitely give you the impression that you are reading exactly what Earl herself wanted to tell the world. Some parts of very personal, and create a close personal bond between reader and author, reaching beyond life and death to connect people in a spiritual and inexplicable way. It does make you feel grateful for what you have and it also incites a great deal of amazement that someone so young and relatively experienced could have suffered so much and become so wise.

The layout of the book is well thought through and it is quite an easy book to dip in and out of – which is quite good, because at points you cannot read the words because of the tears in your eyes. There are some really powerful and striking ideas that can stop you in your tracks and really make your mind start reeling. It’s the sort of book that can make you want to stand up and start making a difference with your life. It makes you realize just how precious every second is and how important it is never to waste a single moment on this Earth.
